1800 Tequila Pays Homage to Late Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat

1800 Tequila have announced that this year’s Essential Artists limited-edition series will celebrate the late, iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat will have the posthumous honor of being the artist featured in the sixth Essential Artist series, which over the years has featured a variety of talented artisans, including Gary Baseman, Studio One, and Shepard Fairey, among others. Known worldwide for his unique style and rebellious technique, Basquiat was selected as the sole artist for this year’s release; this Spring six of his original designs will adorn a limited run of special edition 1800 Tequila bottles.

“We are excited to showcase the works of a celebrated artist who was unafraid to express his uniquely creative spirit so much so that we dedicated the entire collection to one artist for the first time” said a spokesperson for 1800 Tequila. “Basquiat was a visionary, and a nonconformist role model for strength in simplicity and shared the same core values as the world’s most singularly drinkable tequila, consistently refusing to fall victim to gratuitous trend.”

The limited edition 1800 Tequila Essential Artists series bottles (750ml/40% ABV) will be available at liquor stores in select markets beginning Spring 2014 for $30.

About Jean-Michel Basquiat:

Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the best known artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His career in art spanned the late 1970s through the 1980s until his death in 1988 at the age of 27. Before his career as a painter began, Basquiat produced punk-inspired postcards for sale on the street and become known for his political–poetical graffiti under the name of SAMO. He carried his graffiti aesthetic into his professional career by incorporating text, repetitive imagery and cultural symbols into his paintings. Basquiat works are edgy and raw. Through a bold sense of color and composition Basquiat maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery and primitivism. The Basquiat brand embodies the values and aspirations of young, international urban culture.
